Discussion etiquette

Using a threaded discussion is, in many ways, like using the telephone, writing email or having a face-to-face group discussion. As with those methods of communication, there is a requirement for etiquette to be taken into consideration. The following are some guidelines for proper etiquette in the discussion boards for this module:

If you have any suggestions for additions or modifications, please let me know.

Pete Fothergill

Please focus on the specific topic being discussed.

Remember that not everyone can typr acccuraterly (that's a joke, by the way), so please don't make negative comments about grammar and spelling as this detracts from the focus and doesn't contribute to healthy and productive discussions. TXT MSGNG N XSIV ABBS R NOT ALLOWED (neither is excessive use of CAPITALS and !!!!! - it looks like you are shouting).

Keep the academic discussion objective: evaluate the message, not the messenger.

If you wish to address a specific message, make sure that you reply to that message in the appropriate place.

Communicate using precise terminology and direct references. Remember that this is an academic community, treat your contributions as something you would include in an assignment.

Try to be logical and methodical in your response, this will allow people to respond and the discussion will be clearer.

Do not use obscene language or references, remember that this is an academic community.

Please don't post material without due consideration for the views of others. Don't use offensive language or make offensive remarks; but do instigate, encourage and respond to healthy debate.

You can make changes to your messages after you have posted them but your facilitators are the only individuals that can delete messages from the discussion.

Make as many contributions as you like, but please don't hog the board.
